The number of individuals expressing their intent to join a U.S. class-action lawsuit against Coupang following a significant data leak has exceeded 2,300, according to a domestic law firm.
Daeryun Law Firm LLC reported that its U.S. subsidiary, SJKP Law Firm LLP, has received applications from 2,346 individuals, primarily consisting of Korean nationals with U.S. citizenship, local residents, and consumers residing in Korea.
This number is anticipated to increase, as some consumers involved in a domestic lawsuit initiated by Daeryun have indicated their plans to participate in the U.S. class action.
During a press conference held on Monday, SJKP LLP announced its preparation to file a class-action complaint in the U.S. Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York against Coupang, which recently confirmed that the personal data of 33.7 million users in Korea had been leaked, yet "has shown no meaningful accountability to date."
SJKP emphasized that as a U.S. corporation, Coupang must respond to the full authority of the American judicial system. The lawsuit aims to uncover the truth behind the data breach and secure meaningful compensation for affected individuals.
The law firm noted that the U.S. action will proceed independently of any developments in Korea, stating, "While Korean proceedings focus on compensating consumer harm, the U.S. lawsuit will address fundamentally different issues: Coupang's failures in corporate governance and breaches of disclosure obligations as a U.S.-listed company."
SJKP aims to file the class-action lawsuit against the New York-listed e-commerce giant within the year.
On November 29, Coupang confirmed that the personal information of 33.7 million customer accounts had been compromised, significantly higher than the 4,500 accounts initially reported to authorities on November 20. This number represents nearly two-thirds of Korea's population.
Given that active users of Coupang's Product Commerce division, which includes its delivery service, reached 24.7 million in the third quarter, the scale of the leak indicates that nearly the entire user base may have been affected.
The updated figures reveal that users' personal information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, and delivery addresses, was compromised; however, the company stated that payment information and login credentials were not affected.

SJKP LLP는 월요일(미국 시간) 열린 기자회견에서 쿠팡에 대한 집단 소송을 뉴욕 남부 연방 지방법원에 제기할 준비를 하고 있으며, 쿠팡 고객 3,370만 명의 개인 정보가 유출되었지만 "현재까지 아무런 실질적인 책임을 지지 않았다"고 밝혔다.
SJKP는 "미국 기업으로서 미국 사법 시스템의 전권에 응답해야 한다"며, "이번 소송을 통해 유출 사건의 진상을 밝혀내고 피해 개인들에게 실질적인 보상을 확보할 것"이라고 말했다.
SJKP는 한국의 상황과 무관하게 미국 법원에서 독립적으로 이事件을 진행할 것이라고 덧붙였다.
또한 "한국의 절차는 소비자 피해 보상에 초점을 맞추고 있지만, SJKP가 대륜과 협력하여 진행하는 미국 소송은 쿠팡의 기업 거버넌스 실패와 미국 상장 기업으로서의 공시 의무 위반이라는 근본적으로 다른 이슈를 다룰 것"이라고 말했다.
