Suwon Samsung, a four-time K League 1 champion and a holder of five Korea FA Cup titles and two Asian club trophies, experienced a shocking relegation after finishing last in the league during the 2023 season. Their direct relegation was notable, as it marked a significant downturn for the historically successful club.
In the 2024 season, Suwon Samsung finished sixth in K League 2 with 56 points, failing to qualify for the playoffs. However, in the current season, they improved to second place with 72 points, scoring a league-high 76 goals, featuring standout performances from players such as Stanislav Iljutcenko and Matheus Serafim, who each netted 13 goals.
Jeju SK FC last played in K League 2 in 2020, winning the title that year to secure promotion. This season, they struggled, finishing with the second-fewest goals scored and a poor goal differential.
Suwon FC has not been in K League 2 since 2020, managing to survive the promotion-relegation playoffs last year. Despite a fifth-place finish in 2024, they fell to 10th this season, with forward Pablo Sabbag winning the K League 1 scoring title.
Bucheon FC 1995, which has never reached K League 1 since its inception in 2013, is participating in its first promotion-relegation playoffs. The team has shown a strong offense, led by Rodrigo Bassani, who previously played for Suwon Samsung.
