A special counsel team announced on Friday that it intends to question former President Yoon Suk Yeol next week as part of an investigation into alleged government interference in a military probe regarding the death of a young Marine in 2023.
The team, led by special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon, plans to summon Yoon on Monday for questioning later in the week concerning the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun, which occurred in July 2023, according to assistant special counsel Choung Min-young during a briefing.
The investigation focuses on allegations that some of the initial suspects in the case were cleared due to interference by the Yoon administration. Reports suggest that Yoon reacted angrily during a meeting with senior presidential officials after discovering that the probe implicated a senior Marine commander in Chae's death.
Following this, the investigation's findings were reportedly altered to eliminate charges of death by negligence against the Marine commander.
The special counsel team has questioned multiple former government and military officials allegedly connected to the case, including former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup and former Marine Corps Commandant Kim Kye-hwan.
Cpl. Chae lost his life while participating in a search operation for victims of torrential rain, having been swept away by an overflowing stream while not wearing a life vest or proper safety equipment.

특별검사팀은 윤이 최상급 해군 지휘관이 최 상병의 사망에 대해 책임이 있다고 지적한 수사 결과를 알게 된 후, 고위 대통령 관계자 회의에서 격분했다는 의혹을 조사하고 있다.
그 결과, 해군 지휘관에 대한 과실치사 혐의가 변경되었다.
팀은 사건에 연루된 것으로 알려진 여러 전 정부 및 군 관계자들을 조사해왔으며, 여기에는 이종섭 전 국방부 장관과 김계환 전 해병대 사령관이 포함된다.
최상병은 폭우 피해자 수색 작업 중 구명조끼와 적절한 안전 장비 없이 불어난 하천에 휩쓸려 사망했다.
