Hanwha Ocean has unveiled its next-generation strategic surface warship, aimed at enhancing Korea’s naval capabilities and leading the future of the country’s defense sector.
The new model was introduced during the 3rd Advanced Naval Smart Tech Forum toward a Global Future: Innovation Waves, held on Tuesday at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul. The event gathered approximately 100 participants, including lawmakers, former military officials, and experts from both Korea and abroad, to discuss advancements in naval technologies and smart combat systems.
During the forum, the president and COO of the naval ship business at Hanwha Ocean presented the new warship model, detailing its development background and key features.
He stated, “As maritime power competition intensifies amid changing global security dynamics, a new class of naval platform is required.” He emphasized that the vessel represents Hanwha Ocean’s commitment to innovation and marks a significant milestone in Korea’s naval shipbuilding history.
The next-generation warship is designed for multi-domain operations, encompassing sea, air, space, and cyber capabilities. It features enhanced combat performance, survivability, and mission flexibility, with a wave-piercing bow and tumblehome hull design that improves sea-keeping and reduces radar signature, representing a significant advancement over traditional surface combatants.
Instead of creating a larger ship, Hanwha Ocean focused on developing a smaller, more capable vessel that can operate efficiently with a lean crew, even on extended missions. The ship's AI-enabled command network integrates combat and navigation systems in real time, offering a multi-layered defense against modern threats such as missiles and drones.
Internally, the ship includes a smart bridge and an ergonomically designed control room to facilitate quicker decision-making and enhance working conditions for the crew.
According to Hanwha Ocean, this platform is intended to serve as a cornerstone for Korea’s naval modernization over the next two to three decades, with aspirations for it to become a flagship product representing the country’s defense industry at sea.

차세대 전투함은 해양, 공중, 우주 및 사이버 등 다중 분야에서 작전하도록 설계되었습니다. 탁월한 전투 성능, 생존성 및 임무 유연성을 결합 하였습니다. 웨이브-피어싱 선미 및 텀블홈 선체 디자인은 해양 운항 능력을 개선하고 레이더 표식을 줄여 기존 수륙 전투함에 비해 분명한 진전을 이루었습니다.
한화는 더 큰 선박을 건조하는 대신 작고도 능력 있는 선박을 개발하여 최소 인원으로도 효율적으로 작전할 수 있게 하였습니다. AI 기반의 지휘망은 전투 및 항법 시스템을 실시간으로 통합하여 미사일, 드론 및 기타 현대적 위협에 대한 다층 방어를 제공합니다.
선내에는 스마트 브릿지와 인체공학적으로 설계된 제어실이 마련되어 있어 더 빠른 의사결정을 가능하게 하고 승무원의 작업 환경을 개선합니다.
한화오션에 따르면, 이 플랫폼은 향후 20~30년 동안 한국 해군 현대화의 기반이 될 것이며, 회사는 이를 해양에서 한국 K-방산 산업을 대표하는 주력 제품으로 성장시키기 위해 노력할 것입니다.
