A sitting independent lawmaker, formerly affiliated with the ruling party, was questioned by police on Saturday over bribery allegations connected to the 2022 local elections. Authorities stated the inquiry began four days after the arrest, with the lawmaker having left her former party in January to sit as an independent amid ongoing political fallout.
The lawmaker is accused of receiving 100 million won in cash from a former councilor ahead of the 2022 elections in exchange for support for the councilor’s nomination as a party candidate for the Seoul city council. The councilor was eventually nominated and won a seat in the elections.
Police say the lawmaker was presumed to have knowledge of the cash beforehand and that the funds were used toward a rental deposit. The lawmaker has denied the accusation, stating she only learned of her aide’s receipt of the cash after the fact.
