An investment consortium that includes major firms will acquire Aligned Data Centers in a deal valued at $40 billion, as announced on Wednesday.
This acquisition highlights the growing competition to expand the infrastructure necessary for artificial intelligence technology, as companies strive to develop advanced AI models.
The deal follows a series of significant agreements aimed at securing essential computing capacity. Recently, the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, revealed contracts totaling approximately 26 gigawatts of computing capacity, sufficient to power around 20 million U.S. homes.
The consortium, known as the Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure Partnership (AIP), aims to deploy an initial $30 billion in equity capital, with the potential to reach $100 billion, including debt.
This marks AIP's first investment, with the transaction expected to close in the first half of 2026.
"With this investment in Aligned Data Centers, we further our goal of delivering the infrastructure necessary to power the future of AI," stated the CEO of one of the consortium's leading firms.
AIP's primary investors also include a significant investment authority and a state-owned investor from Singapore.
Aligned Data Centers specializes in designing, building, and operating data centers for large-scale cloud providers and enterprises.
The company manages a portfolio of 50 campuses and over 5 gigawatts of operational and planned capacity across the U.S. and Latin America.
Aligned will continue to be headquartered in Dallas, Texas, under the leadership of its CEO.
In related developments, OpenAI recently announced a 6-gigawatt AI chip supply agreement with another major company, which includes an option to acquire a stake in the chipmaker. This follows Nvidia's announcement of plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI and provide data center systems with a minimum of 10 gigawatts of capacity.
