Firefighters successfully extinguished a blaze on Tuesday at a building within the Jogye Temple compound in central Seoul, with no casualties reported.
The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. and was brought under control by 11:57 a.m., approximately an hour and a half later. The incident occurred at the international conference hall located on the second floor of the Korean Buddhism History and Culture Memorial Hall, adjacent to the temple.
Approximately 300 individuals were evacuated from the area, and the firefighting effort involved 142 personnel and 35 fire vehicles.
The blaze was contained before it could spread to the temple or the nearby Central Buddhist Museum, which houses various cultural artifacts. To prevent potential damage, eight out of 33 artifacts on display at the museum were relocated to a storage space at the National Palace Museum of Korea.
Fire authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with preliminary eyewitness accounts suggesting it may have originated from sparks produced by a ceiling air conditioner.
