Korea's customs authorities announced on Tuesday the seizure of over 70 kilograms of illegal drugs smuggled from Thailand, as part of a collaborative operation with Thai law enforcement.
According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS), a total of 72.7 kilograms of narcotics were confiscated across 45 smuggling attempts during the fourth phase of the operation, which took place from March to May. This operation is part of an ongoing crackdown that began in 2022.
Since its inception, the joint enforcement initiative has resulted in the seizure of a cumulative total of 385.5 kilograms of drugs in 156 cases, an amount sufficient for approximately 11.61 million users, according to KCS data.
In the latest operation, cannabis constituted 21 kilograms of the total seized, marking a significant increase from the 0.8 kilograms detected during the third phase. Authorities have linked this rise to Thailand's recent legalization of cannabis, which may have contributed to an uptick in trafficking activities.
The KCS stated its commitment to furthering bilateral and multilateral joint crackdowns with key countries and enhancing cooperation with relevant domestic agencies.

최신 작전에서 대마초는 총 압수량의 21킬로그램을 차지했으며, 이는 3단계에서 검출된 0.8킬로그램에서 크게 증가한 수치이다.
당국은 태국의 최근 대마초 합법화가 밀매 증가로 이어졌다고 분석했다.
그들은 "주요 국가들과의 양자 및 다자 공동 단속을 확대하고 관련 국내 기관과의 협력을 강화할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
