The Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) will commence next month, featuring nearly 220 genre films. The annual event, which celebrates genre cinema from across the globe, will showcase 217 short and feature films from 41 countries in Bucheon, located approximately 19 kilometers west of Seoul, during its run from July 3 to July 13, as announced by organizers on Tuesday.
Festival director Shin Cheol addressed the challenges facing Korean cinema, citing competition from YouTube and streaming platforms. He emphasized that BIFAN aims to foster creativity and passion over financial considerations, stating, "Amid this crisis, BIFAN will embark on a journey where competition is driven by imagination and passion, not by capital."
The festival's mission is to explore new possibilities by transcending traditional boundaries, reflected in its slogans, "Stay Strange" and "Expand Your Frame," according to organizers.
The festival will kick off with the Polish director Piotr Winiewicz's 2024 film, "About a Hero," which investigates the role of artificial intelligence in film creation. The event will conclude with "Go-To Restaurant," directed by South Korean filmmaker Han Jay, which delves into the values of community.

신철 영화제 집행위원장은 화요일 기자회견에서 "많은 사람들이 한국 영화가 유튜브와 스트리밍 플랫폼으로 인해 매우 어려운 상황에 처해 있다고 말하고 있다. 이러한 위기 속에서 BIFAN은 자본이 아닌 상상력과 열정으로 경쟁이 이뤄지는 여정을 시작할 것"이라고 말했다.
영화제의 방향성은 전통적인 경계를 넘어서 새로운 가능성을 모색하는 것으로, 주최측은 "Stay Strange"와 "Expand Your Frame"이라는 슬로건을 통해 이를 표현하고 있다.
영화제는 폴란드 감독 피오트르 위니에비츠의 2024년작 "About a Hero"로 시작된다. 이 작품은 인공지능(AI)의 영화 창작에서의 역할을 탐구한다. 영화제를 마무리하는 작품은 한국 감독 한재의 "Go-To Restaurant"으로, 공산주의의 가치에 대해 다룬다.
