In response to the massive wildfires that swept through Korea’s southeastern regions earlier this year, the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched a special program inviting foreign residents to support those affected by the disaster.
The initial aim was to recruit a few dozen volunteers for work on April 4 in Andong, a city in North Gyeongsang Province, or in Yeongdeok, a county located further east. However, within a day of the announcement, over 300 foreign residents applied through the city-run Seoul Foreign Resident Center.
A city official involved in organizing the program expressed surprise at the high level of interest, stating, “It was a pleasant surprise.” Due to safety considerations, only 71 volunteers were ultimately selected to participate in the mission.
These volunteers, alongside 27 medical professionals and 58 city officials, were dispatched to Andong and Yeongdeok, where they assisted in moving and sorting boxes of relief goods and cleaning temporary shelters established for fire victims.

프로그램을 조직한 한 시 관계자는 "기쁘고 놀라운 일이었다"고 전했다. "하지만 안전상 이유로 모든 사람을 수용할 수는 없었다. 결국 71명이 선정되어 미션에 참여하게 되었다."
외국 자원 봉사자들은 27명의 의료 전문가 및 58명의 시 공무원과 함께 각각 안동과 영덕으로 보내져 구호 물품 상자를 옮기고 정리했으며, 화재로 인해 임시로 설치된 대피소를 청소했다.
