Firefighters successfully brought the main blaze of a wildfire in the southeastern city of Daegu under control on Tuesday, nearly 23 hours after it ignited, leading to the evacuation of over 2,000 residents.
The Korea Forest Service reported that the fire began Monday afternoon on Mount Hamji, located approximately 230 kilometers southeast of Seoul, and was largely extinguished by around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
In response to the rapidly spreading fire, which was fueled by strong winds, authorities issued the highest-level wildfire response late Monday. Although no casualties have been reported, the blaze prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 villagers and led to temporary traffic restrictions at a nearby highway interchange, which was reopened early Tuesday as conditions improved.
The fire affected an area equivalent to 364 soccer fields, impacting approximately 260 hectares of forest. Officials have cautioned that the damage assessment may increase following further inspections.
Firefighting efforts initially faced challenges due to high temperatures, dry weather, and strong winds, with the containment rate remaining low during the early stages of the incident.

초기 소방 작업은 높은 기온, 건조한 날씨, 강한 바람이 겹치며 어려움을 겪었고, 진화율은 여전히 낮았다.
