The government has approved a plan to allocate 870 billion won ($608 million) for the purchase of new presidential helicopters with enhanced survivability, as announced by the state arms procurement agency on Wednesday.
The Defense Project Promotion Committee, led by acting Defense Minister Kim Seon-ho, approved three agenda items during a meeting, including the helicopter project, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
DAPA stated that the new fleet of helicopters will be equipped with improved survivability and command and control capabilities, aimed at ensuring a heightened response to potential enemy threats. The acquisition of these helicopters is planned to be completed by 2031.
Additionally, the committee approved a 1.9 trillion-won project to develop a domestically produced aircraft that can analyze threatening electronic signals and conduct jamming attacks, with a completion target set for 2034.
DAPA indicated that this project is expected to enhance the survivability and joint operational capabilities of air assets involved in strike missions against key enemy targets during contingencies.

DAPA에 따르면, 새로 도입될 헬리콥터들은 생존성과 지휘 및 통제 능력이 강화되어 잠재적 적의 위협에 대한 대응 능력을 높일 것으로 예상된다. DAPA는 2031년까지 헬리콥터를 인수할 계획이다.
회의에서 위원회는 또한 2034년까지 위협 전자 신호를 분석하고 비상 상황에서 전파 방해 공격을 수행할 수 있는 국산 항공기 개발을 위한 1.9조 원 규모의 프로젝트도 승인했다.
DAPA는 "이 프로젝트는 우리의 공중 자산이 주요 적 자산에 대한 공습 임무를 수행하는 데 있어 생존성과 합동 작전 능력을 향상시킬 것으로 기대된다"고 말했다.
