Korea and the United States are scheduled to conduct working-level talks this week to finalize details regarding their recent agreement on the tariff scheme established during the Trump administration, as announced by Seoul's industry ministry on Wednesday.
The two-day "technical discussions" will commence on Wednesday (U.S. time) in Washington. This meeting follows last week's agreement aimed at creating a package deal addressing the new U.S. tariffs and enhancing bilateral economic and industrial cooperation prior to the expiration of a 90-day pause on the tariff measures on July 8, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Officials from the ministry and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) will participate in the upcoming discussions. A senior ministry official stated that the purpose of these technical consultations is to finalize the framework for discussions concerning U.S. tariff measures. The ministry will actively seek exemptions from reciprocal tariffs, item-specific tariffs on products such as automobiles and steel, and any potential new levies to minimize adverse impacts on Korean businesses.

이번 이틀 간의 '기술 논의'는 미국 시간으로 수요일 워싱턴에서 시작되며, 이는 지난주에 합의된 새로운 미국 관세와 양국 간 경제 및 산업 협력 방안에 대한 패키지 거래를 마련하기 위한 후속 조치로 진행된다. 이 회담은 90일의 관세 조치 중단이 7월 8일에 만료되기 전에 이루어질 예정이다.
예정된 논의에는 산업부와 미국 무역대표부(USTR)의 관계자들이 참석할 예정이다.
정상적인 산업부 고위 관계자는 "이번 기술적 협의는 미국의 관세 조치에 관한 논의의 틀을 최종 확정하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다. 우리는 상호 관세, 자동차 및 철강 제품에 대한 품목별 관세, 그리고 향후 도입될 수 있는 새로운 세금으로부터의 면제를 적극적으로 모색해 우리 기업에 대한 피해를 최소화할 것"이라고 밝혔다.
