The Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF), Korea's leading platform for independent and art house cinema, commenced on Wednesday, showcasing 224 films from 57 countries. This marks the 26th edition of the annual festival, which will run for 10 days.
The opening ceremony took place at 6:30 p.m. at the Sori Arts Center in Jeonju, approximately 190 kilometers south of Seoul. Following the ceremony, the festival opened with the Romanian film "Kontinental '25," directed and written by Radu Jude. This comedy-drama explores the moral crisis faced by a bailiff after a homeless man she attempts to evict commits suicide. The film received the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in February.
The festival will conclude with the Korean documentary "In the Land of Machines," directed by Kim Ok-young, which follows the lives of three migrant workers from Nepal employed in Korea. Throughout the festival, a total of 224 films will be screened in Jeonju, with 80 films making their global premieres. Additionally, a special section dedicated to democracy will feature six films that examine pertinent issues.

제26회 연례 영화제는 서울에서 약 190킬로미터 떨어진 전주 소리문화관에서 오후 6시 30분에 열리는 개막식으로 10일간의 일정을 시작한다.
개막식 후에는 루마니아 영화 Kontinental '25가 상영되며, 이 영화는 레이두 주데 감독이 제작하고 각본을 맡았다. 이 코미디 드라마 영화는 퇴거 명령을 내리기 위해 노력하는 집행관이 노숙자를 퇴거시키려다 그가 자살하는 도덕적 위기를 다룬다. 이 작품은 2월에 열린 제75회 베를린국제영화제에서 최우수 각본상을 수상한 바 있다.
영화제는 김옥영 감독의 한국 다큐멘터리 영화 In the Land of Machines로 마무리된다. 이 영화는 한국에서 일하는 네팔 출신 이주 노동자 세 명의 삶을 조명한다.
영화제 기간 동안 224편의 영화가 전주에서 상영되며, 그 중 80편은 전 세계 최초로 상영된다. 민주주의를 주제로 한 특별 섹션에서는 한국 사회를 조명하는 6편의 영화가 소개될 예정이다.
