Impeachment motion for top broadcasting regulator passes

Jeon Hye-jeong, spokesperson for President Yoon Suk Yeol, addressed reporters on Friday at the presidential office in Yongsan, central Seoul. The National Assembly passed an impeachment bill against Lee Jin-sook, the controversial chair of South Korea's top broadcasting regulator, the Korea Communications Commission, just two days after President Yoon Suk Yeol confirmed her nomination. The ruling People Power Party lawmakers boycotted the session, which was led by the Democratic Party of Korea and minor opposition parties, resulting in the bill's passage. This move suspends Lee from office until the Constitutional Court makes the final decision on her impeachment, causing the KCC's decision-making process to come to a standstill. Yoon's office criticized the opposition-led bill, comparing it to North Korea sending balloons filled with trash to the South. Jeong Hey-jeon, the president's spokesperson, condemned the opposition's actions, stating that the Democratic Party has introduced seven impeachment bills in the past two months and expressing disbelief at the grounds for Lee's impeachment given her short time in office. The opposition alleges that Lee's appointment is part of the president's attempt to influence media bias in favor of the administration due to her conservative background.
