Yonhap</p></div></div><p class="editor-p">Police investigating alleged irregularities in the appointment of former national football team coach Hong Myung-bo left the case dormant for more than nine months despite guidance from an internal oversight body to expedite the inquiry.</p><p class="editor-p">The investigation was recently moved to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA), amid growing criticism that action was delayed as public and political pressure rose after the national team’s disappointing World Cup performance.</p><p class="editor-p">On Sept. 23 last year, the SMPA instructed Jongno Police Station to speed up the probe into a complaint accusing Lee Lim-saeng, the former technical director of the Korea Football Association (KFA), of obstruction of business in relation to Hong’s appointment.</p><p class="editor-p">The complaint, filed in July 2024 by a citizen, alleges the KFA bylaws and national team operating regulations were violated during the selection process for the head coach.</p><p class="editor-p">After repeated delays, the complainant sought an investigative review to ensure the inquiry was fair and lawful. The review panel urged prompt handling, but Jongno Police Station did not act for nine months.</p><p class="editor-p">The case was transferred Wednesday to the SMPA’s Financial Crimes Investigation Division, citing the case’s significance.</p><p class="editor-p">The shift followed heightened public and political pressure, including criticism from the president regarding Hong’s appointment.</p><p class="editor-p">Separately, a first-instance Seoul Administrative Court ruling found that Chung Mong-gyu, then-president of the KFA, improperly intervened in the national team coach selection without proper authority.</p><p class="editor-p">With both Chung and Hong having stepped down, critics question whether any potential investigative findings will translate into substantive accountability.</p>

<p>경찰이 반복적으로 결정을 지연하자 고발인은 수사 적정성 여부를 검토하는 조사 검토를 요청했고, 검토 위원회는 사건을 조속히 처리할 것을 권고했으나 종로경찰서는 다음 9개월간 추가 조치를 취하지 않았다.</p>
<p>경찰은 사건의 중대성을 이유로 수사를 서울지방경찰청 금융범죄수사대로 이첩했다.</p>
<p>이 같은 결정은 홍 감독 임명에 대한 대중과 정치권의 압력이 고조된 직후인 상황에서 이뤄졌으며, 이재명 대통령의 공개 비판도 있었습니다.</p>
<p>한편 서울 행정법원은 전 KFA 회장 정몽규가 적절한 권한 없이 국가대표팀 감독 선임에 부당하게 개입했다는 1심 판단을 내렸다.</p>
<p>정몽규 전 회장과 홍 감독 두 사람 모두 물러난 상황에서, 수사의 최종 결과가 실질적 효과를 낳을지에 대해 비판적 시각이 남아 있다.</p>
