<p>The University of Seoul has been selected for a government pilot program under the Brain Korea 21 (BK21) Project to expand interdisciplinary artificial intelligence (AI) research and nurture AI professionals. It will establish an AIX Environmental Health Digital Twin Education and Research Center as part of the initiative.</p>
<p>The university plans to build an interdisciplinary education and research system that integrates AI with urban studies, environmental science, and public health to cultivate professionals capable of addressing future societal challenges.</p>
<p>Leadership for the center will be provided by Jeon Jong-june, a statistics professor, who emphasized the effort aims to address complex future challenges through AI-enabled collaboration across disciplines and to contribute to local policymaking and public value.</p>
<p>The selection was announced in late June by the Ministry of Education, which named four universities participating in the BK21 Project’s fourth phase to support AI+X convergence education and research centers.</p>
<p>AI+X refers to the integration of artificial intelligence with diverse academic disciplines and professional fields.</p>
<p>The University of Seoul said the center will focus on cultivating AI-convergence professionals who can create public value by addressing urban, environmental, and public health challenges, recognizing increasing demand for experts who combine AI with urban studies, environmental science, and public health to tackle environmental hazards and their health impacts.</p>
<p>The center will offer problem-solving-oriented curricula across urban studies, environmental science, and public health that integrate AI technologies, while providing hands-on experience through research projects and industry-academia collaboration initiatives. It will also promote interdisciplinary research in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and industry partners to analyze and predict the impacts of urban environmental hazards on public health.</p>

6월 말 교육부는 BK21 4단계 프로젝트의 일환으로 “AI+X” 융합 교육 및 연구센터를 지원하는 파일럿 프로그램에 참여할 네 곳의 대학을 선정했다고 밝혔습니다.
AI+X는 인공지능과 다양한 학문 분야 및 전문 영역의 융합을 의미합니다. 서울시는 교육 및 연구센터가 도심, 환경 및 공중 보건 문제를 해결함으로써 공익을 창출할 수 있는 AI 융합 전문가를 양성하는 데 중점을 둘 것이라고 언급했습니다. 도시 연구, 환경 과학 및 공중 보건 분야의 전문지식뿐만 아니라 AI 기술에 대한 전문성을 갖춘 인재에 대한 수요가 증가하고 있으며, 대기오염, 소음, 열 스트레스 등 복합적 환경 위험이 공중 보건과 삶의 질에 영향을 미치고 있다고 설명했습니다.
센터는 첨단 AI 기술을 통합한 도시 연구, 환경 과학 및 공중 보건 분야의 문제 해결형 커리큘럼을 제공할 예정이며, 학생들이 연구 프로젝트 및 산학 협력 이니셔티브에 참여해 실무형 경험을 쌓을 수 있도록 지원할 것입니다. 또한 서울시 및 산업 파트너와의 협력을 통해 도시 환경 위험이 공중 보건에 미치는 영향을 분석·예측하는 학제 간 연구를 촉진할 계획입니다.
