<p>The defending Korean baseball champions, the LG Twins, became the first team this season to reach 50 wins, as they pursue their second consecutive Korean Series title.</p>
<p>The Twins defeated the Kiwoom Heroes 7-5 at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, improving to 50-30-0 for the season and leading the standings by 2 1/2 games over the Samsung Lions.</p>
<p>Historically in the Korea Baseball Organization, teams that reach 50 wins go on to finish first about 69 percent of the time (25 of 36), and 21 of those teams have won the Korean Series.</p>
<p>The Twins are aiming to become the first team since the 2015-2016 Doosan Bears to repeat as Korean Series champions.</p>
<p>Austin Dean belted his league-leading 27th home run in Thursday's win, and closer Son Ju-young pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save, one behind the league leader. Son's save also marked his 14th consecutive one, a new Twins franchise record.</p>
<p>Dean and Son have been the standout performers for a club that otherwise sits in the middle of the pack in hitting and pitching metrics.</p>
<p>Dean is in his fourth KBO season and is delivering an MVP-worthy campaign, leading the league in home runs, posting the highest on-base plus slugging (1.110), and ranking second with 80 RBIs, 108 hits, and a .350 batting average. No Twins player has previously won a league home run title.</p>
<p>Son began the season in May after an oblique injury and moved into the closer role following an elbow injury to You Young-chan. Son, who had said he never closed games before, has been exceptionally effective, posting a 1.09 ERA over 24 2/3 innings with 26 strikeouts and allowing only three earned runs; he has not allowed more than one earned run in any appearance this year.</p>
