<p>Korea detected 2.4 trillion won ($1.61 billion) in illegal foreign exchange transactions through May as authorities stepped up monitoring amid currency-market volatility.</p>
<p>The finance ministry disclosed the figure at a meeting with foreign exchange-related agencies following concerns over illegal trades after the won’s decline against the U.S. dollar.</p>
<p>The Korea Customs Service reported it referred 84 cases of illegal foreign exchange transactions to prosecutors through May.</p>
<p>The finance ministry, customs service, and tax agency pledged to strengthen coordination to combat offshore tax evasion and track illicit foreign currency flows.</p>
<p>Lee Hyung-ryul, director general for international finance at the ministry, said the supply-demand balance in the foreign exchange market is gradually improving, aided by exporter inflows, and that Korea is expected to see a structural shift in foreign currency supply in the second half, underpinned by solid economic fundamentals, including a record trade surplus of $138.3 billion in the first half of 2026.</p>

<p>재정경제부는 원·달러 환율 하락에 따른 불안이 확산되자 외환 관련 단체들과의 회의에서 이 같은 사실을 발표했다.</p>
<p>회의에서 관세청은 5월까지 불법 외환 거래와 관련된 건수 84건을 검찰에 송치했다고 말했다.</p>
<p>재정당국과 관세청, 국세청은 또한 해외탈세를 근절하고 불법 외화 흐름을 추적하기 위한 협력 강화를 약속했다.</p>
<p>기재부 국제금융 국장은 외환시장의 수급 균형이 수출입 기업의 달러 유입으로 점차 개선되고 있다고 밝혔다.</p>
<p>또한 기재부는 2026년 상반기에 무역 흑자 기록(1조3830억 달러)을 바탕으로 강한 경제 기초가 뒷받침되며 하반기에 외화 공급에 구조적 변화가 있을 것으로 내다봤다.</p>
