<p>Korea’s gubernatorial candidates in South Gyeongsang Province are prioritizing the region’s aerospace and defense industries to position the area as a global hub for advanced defense, shipbuilding, and aerospace technologies. Both ruling and opposition campaigns emphasize building an industrial ecosystem anchored in research to create high-value jobs related to AI, next-generation defense systems, and future mobility.</p>
<p>Kim Kyung-soo, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for South Gyeongsang governor, advocates aligning with a national vision to blend defense, shipbuilding, nuclear energy, and AI to develop nuclear-powered submarines. He notes the province already serves as the country’s primary defense manufacturing and shipbuilding base, but highlights a concentration of high-value research activities in Seoul and surrounding areas. His plan includes establishing a privately led defense AI data center in Changwon worth 1.5 trillion won and attracting core R&D functions from major defense firms to the province.</p>
<p>Park Wan-soo, the People Power Party candidate for South Gyeongsang governor, proposes dividing the province into five economic zones with tailored industrial priorities. He aims to strengthen Changwon as a defense and nuclear industry hub by promoting a national defense and nuclear energy industrial complex and creating an advanced defense industry promotion institute there. He envisions turning the western region into a leading aerospace cluster and developing a Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation zone and a naval maintenance, repair, and overhaul cluster for Geoje and Tongyeong to boost shipbuilding competitiveness, ultimately aiming to transform the province into the nation’s economic capital through region-specific growth strategies.</p>
<br><hr><br>남부 경상도지사 선거 후보들은 항공우주와 방위 산업의 성장세를 경제 공약의 중심에 두고 이 지역을 첨단 방위, 조선 및 항공우주 기술의 글로벌 허브로 탈바꿈하겠다고 약속하고 있다.
여당과 야당의 후보들 모두 인공지능(AI), 차세대 방산 시스템, 미래 모빌리티 산업과 연계된 부가가치 창출 일자리를 지역 산업 생태계와 연계해 강화하겠다는 계획을 제시했다.
더불어민주당(DPK) 후보 김경수은 국가의 방위, 선박, 원자력 에너지 및 AI 기술의 결합을 통한 잠수함 개발 비전을 지지하겠다고 밝혔다.
김 후보는 이 비전이 이미 방산 제조와 조선의 국가 주요 생산기지 역할을 하고 있는 남부 경상도에 큰 기회가 될 것이라고 말했다.
“이 도 however 지역은 국내 방산 산업 매출의 절반 이상을 차지하고 있지만 관련 연구기관 기능은 이곳에 위치한 비중이 0.1%도 되지 않는다”고 김 후보는 화요일에 말했다.
그는 제조업이 이 지역에 집중된 구조적 불균형을 지적하며, 고부가가치의 설계, 전략 및 연구 등은 서울 및 수도권에 남아 있는 점을 비판했다.
그의 핵심 선거 공약에는 창원에서 1.5조 원(미화 10억 달러) 규모의 민간 주도 방위 AI 데이터 센터 설립이 포함되어 있다.
또한 한화에어로스페이스, 현대로템, LIG 방산·항공우주, 한화 오션 등 주요 방산 기업의 핵심 연구 개발 기능을 도로 경상도에 유치하겠다고 약속했다.
한편, 제1야당 국민의힘 PPP 후보 박완수는 남부 경상도 지역 발전 전략을 다섯 개의 경제권(중심, 동부, 서부, 남부, 북부)으로 구분하고 각 지역마다 전문 산업 우선순위를 두는 계획을 제시했다.
박 후보는 창원을 방위 및 원자력 산업의 허브로 육성하고 방위 및 원자력 산업 단지의 조성을 추진하며 첨단 방위 산업 진흥원을 해당 지역에 설립하겠다고 밝혔다.
또한 한국항공우주산업, 항공우주 국가 산업단지가 위치한 진주·사천 등 서부권을 국내 선도 항공 우주 클러스터로 육성하겠다고 약속했다.
고지형의 거점 도시 거제와 통영에 대해서는 한미 조선 협력지대를 조성하고 해군 정비, 수리 및 개량 클러스터를 발전시켜 한국 조선업의 국제 경쟁력을 강화하겠다고 제시했다.
“남부 경상도 province를 지역별 성장 전략을 추진하며 국가의 경제 수도로 탈바꿈시키겠다”고 박 후보는 말했다.
