LAFC recently suffered a 2-1 MLS defeat to Portland Timbers in which Son and other veterans were rested, a result the club said would have minimal impact on the upcoming cup match as they aimed to be well-rested for Cruz Azul.
The outcome of the second leg will determine whether Son wins his first trophy with LAFC, following the club’s elimination in last year’s Western Conference semifinals. An away goals rule could come into play if necessary, and extra time and penalties would be used if Cruz Azul wins the second leg 3-0 to tie the series at 3-3 on aggregate.
In the broader context of the competition, nine consecutive away-match scoring runs by LAFC in the Concacaf Champions Cup ties the MLS club’s record for the longest such streak since 2008. Earlier round results included MLS teams San Diego FC and FC Cincinnati exiting after second-leg defeats in Mexico.
