A country’s flagship state orchestra will present a film music program titled “Hollywood Blockbusters” at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall, with performances on May 1 and May 2. The program pairs symphonic music with large-scale media visuals to immerse audiences in iconic blockbuster scores of the 21st century.
The performances will be led by a conductor based in the United Kingdom who specializes in concert works for film music. The program centers on Hans Zimmer, a composer widely credited with redefining today’s blockbuster sound through collaborations with major film directors.
The evening will feature Zimmer’s music, including a suite from The Dark Knight and selections from Inception, Pearl Harbor, Kung Fu Panda, The Da Vinci Code, Wonder Woman, The Lion King and Gladiator. Zimmer’s score for The Lion King is noted for blending orchestral and choral elements with African musical influence, while Gladiator and The Dark Knight are highlighted for their brooding textures and memorable motifs.
Beyond Zimmer, the program examines how contemporary cinema has embraced modern and minimalist composers. Works by Philip Glass, used in The Illusionist and The Hours, and the influence of Gyorgy Ligeti’s sound world as heard in 2001: A Space Odyssey, illustrate the intersection of arthouse sensibilities and mainstream film scores. Max Richter’s minimalist approach, including his On the Nature of Daylight, is also featured to trace the lineage shaping today’s screen music.
Media artist Woo Ki-ha will design the visual environment, treating imagery as an extension of the music’s emotional and structural arc rather than a literal illustration of the narrative. The conductor brings extensive experience in synchronizing live orchestras with moving images, having staged productions based on scores from Superman, Moby Dick and Chorus and conducted works from Psycho to Back to the Future.
According to the orchestra, the projections aim to let audiences “follow the emotion and architecture of sound with their eyes,” offering a more intuitive and multilayered way of experiencing orchestral music. The ensemble, described as the country’s flagship state orchestra, was founded in 1985.

짐머의 라이온 킹의 아카데미 수상 음악은 오케스트라, 합창, 아프리카 음악 요소를 융합한 것이며, 글래디에이터와 다크 나이트는 어두운 질감과 반복되는 모티프로 인물의 심리적 깊이를 탐구하는 것으로 널리 알려져 있다.
짐머 외에도 이번 공연은 현대 영화가 모더니즘적이고 미니멀리스트 작곡가들의 음악을 어떻게 수용해 왔는지 조명한다.
필립 글래스가 '더 일루전리스트'와 '더 아워스'를 위해 작곡한 음악과 스탠리 큐브릭의 '2001: 스페이스 오디세이'에서 사용된 조르지 리게티의 음악 세계는 예술영화의 미학과 상업영화의 경계가 만나는 지점을 강조한다.
