Artificial intelligence is reshaping classrooms and research, prompting universities to redefine their role as educators who cultivate the ability to use AI responsibly while safeguarding human dignity and intellectual autonomy.
Korea University introduced “Next Intelligence” as its guiding vision for its 120th anniversary and has since expanded on it. The concept envisions a partnership between humans and AI, where collaboration enhances each other’s capabilities rather than competing for dominance.
“The core mission of university education is no longer simply to deliver knowledge,” the university’s president said, noting that education should teach what AI cannot replace—how to pose meaningful questions and how to choose values.

The president pointed to insufficient discussion and preparation for developments that may outpace human capabilities, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach.
He outlined two central roles for universities in the AI era: advancing cutting-edge technologies through AI-related research and, perhaps more importantly, strengthening education in the humanities and social sciences to anchor technology in human-centered values.
Under the Next Intelligence framework, the university is integrating AI across education, research and administration, with the aim of producing graduates who can use AI effectively while preserving fundamental knowledge.
Fundamentals in core disciplines remain essential, as they enable students to apply AI more productively and achieve higher-quality outcomes, according to the president.
The institution plans to strengthen core knowledge in the early years, transitioning to an education model that emphasizes applying that knowledge and leveraging AI in more advanced study.
To cultivate individuals capable of safeguarding human dignity, the university is investing heavily in the humanities and social sciences, hiring around 100 new faculty members in those fields over the past three years and beginning construction of a new humanities building—the first major project of its kind among leading universities in the period.
“This reflects a commitment to placing the study of humanity—what AI cannot replace—at the center of the university’s priorities,” the president said.

The university has institutionalized platforms such as the Next Intelligence Forum and Next Intelligence Seminar to connect students with leading global scholars and broaden intellectual horizons.

A major challenge highlighted is the widening gap between rapid technological advancement and ethical discourse related to AI, prompting systematic education on AI ethics and literacy after the university became a pioneer in establishing AI usage guidelines.
Undergraduate courses address AI’s ethical issues, societal impact and global regulatory trends, while graduate programs offer advanced training in research ethics and responsible AI use.
On the research front, collaborative platforms such as the AI Convergence Colloquium bring together scholars from diverse disciplines, sustaining ongoing discussions about risks and ethical implications of AI.
The university’s leadership argues that universities should set new standards and models based on responsible autonomy, rather than enforcing prohibitions or rigid regulations.
Amid global challenges such as climate change, pandemics and energy constraints, AI-related issues require broader social and international consensus, and universities should assume a leadership role in shaping humanity’s trajectory in the AI era.
Overall, the institution argues that universities must lead in integrating AI with humanistic inquiry, embedding ethical frameworks and interdisciplinary problem solving into the education and research enterprise.

그는 AI가 인간과 유사한 수준에 이르게 되면 앞으로의 미래에 대해 충분한 논의와 준비가 부족하다고 지적했다.
이에 대해 그는 AI 시대의 대학의 두 가지 핵심 역할을 제시했다.

따라서 대학은 1~2학년의 핵심 지식과 기본 원리를 중점적으로 가르치는 데 주력하고 있다. 그 이후에는 그 지식을 적용하고 더 고도화된 학습에서 AI를 활용하는 교육 모델로의 전환을 목표로 한다.

학부 과정에서 AI의 윤리 문제, 사회적 영향 및 글로벌 규제 동향에 대한 강의를 제공하고 있다. 대학원생을 대상으로는 연구 윤리와 기술의 책임 있는 활용에 초점을 맞춘 보다 고급 교육을 실시하고 있다.
연구 측면에서 다양한 학문 분야의 학자들을 모으는 “AI 컨버전스 콜로퀴엄”과 같은 협력 플랫폼을 구축했고, AI의 잠재적 위험과 윤리적 함의에 대한 적극적인 논의도 계속 이어지고 있다.
대학의 역할은 금지나 규제에 머무르는 것이 아니라 책임 있는 자율성을 바탕으로 새로운 기준과 모델을 제시하는 것이라고 본다.
기후 위기, 팬데믹, 에너지 고갈과 함께 AI 관련 문제가 글로벌 차원의 도전으로 부상하고 있으며, 이는 어느 한 나라나 기관이 단독으로 해결할 수 있는 문제가 아니다.
기술 자체는 중립적이지만 인간이 개발 방향을 어떻게 설정하느냐에 따라 결과가 크게 달라질 수 있다. 따라서 AI 역시 어떻게 발전해야 할지에 대해 더 넓은 사회적이며 국제적인 합의가 필요하다고 본다. 이 새로운 시대에 대학은 AI 시대의 인류 미래를 형성하는 데 선도적 역할을 해야 한다고 말했다.
