A 27-year-old outfielder who debuted in 2018 has spent most of his professional career in the minor leagues, logging more than 300 Futures League games and appearing in only his 131st Korean Baseball Organization game on Wednesday.
With a limited top-level track record, he accepts that KBO opportunities may come only if another player is injured or slumping.
He has been receiving playing time this week in place of a struggling outfielder who opened the season 8-for-54 (.148) through 17 games.
He began the season in the top league but was sent to the minors after a single pinch-hit appearance on March 31. He was recalled ahead of Tuesday's game against an opponent at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul and drove in two runs in a 6-5 win.
On Wednesday, he delivered a two-run homer off Wang Yan-Cheng to help his team to a 3-0 victory, the ball giving them their third consecutive win. It was his first homer of the season and the seventh of his career.
Song said he did not dwell on the early demotion and credited the minor-league coaching staff for keeping him prepared. In 13 Futures League games, he batted .340/.417/.540 with two home runs, 12 RBIs and three steals, and three days before his recall he had four hits, including a home run, and five RBIs.
The opportunity arose as the veteran outfielder continued to slump, and the manager opted to give him a breather without demoting him. The veteran also helped Song by sharing video and lending his iPad so Song could study the opponent's tendencies before Wednesday's game.
2018년 프로 커리어를 시작한 이래 외야수 송찬의는 현 소속 구단에서 보내는 시간보다 마이너 리그에서 보낸 시간이 훨씬 많았다. 퓨처스 리그에서 300경기가 넘게 뛰었지만 수요일 밤 열린 KBO 경기에서의 131경기째를 기록했다.
27세의 현재, 기록이 제한적이어서 송은 다른 선수가 다치거나 부진에 빠질 때만 KBO의 기회를 얻는 선수로 여겨져 왔다.
그러나 자기 연민에 빠지지 않고 남은 기회를 최대한 활용하겠다는 각오로 임하고 있다.
이번 주에는 고전 중인 외야수 홍창기의 부진 속에서 송이 일부 출장 기회를 얻고 있다. 첫 17경기에서 8안타를 기록했고 타율은 .148이었다.
시즌 초 송은 KBO에서 시작했으나 3월 31일 단 한 차례의 대타 타석을 기록한 뒤 마이너스로 내려갔고, 이후 화요일 잠실 구장에서 열린 상대 팀과의 경기에서 2타점을 기록해 6-5로 승리했다.
수요일에도 잠실에서 열린 경기에서 송은 선발 왕얀청의 투구를 상대로 2타점 홈런을 쳐 팀의 3-0 승리에 기여했고, 이 홈런은 이번 시즌의 첫 홈런이자 통산 7호였다.
수요일의 승리 직후 송은 시즌 초 마이너로 내려간 데에 대해 크게 실망하지 않았다.
“여기서 많은 기회를 얻지 못하리라는 느낌이 있었고, 그것은 극복해야 할 문제이며 최선을 다해 준비하는 것 외에 방법이 없다”라고 그는 말했다. “마이너 리그 코칭 스태프의 많은 도움 덕에 포기하지 않을 수 있었다. 내 노력이 이제 결실을 맺고 있어 정말 감사하다.”
구체적으로 송은 퓨처스 리그 코치들이 타석에서 스윙의 속도를 늦추고 나쁜 구질을 쫓지 않도록 도왔으며, 그곳에서 13경기에서 .340/.417/.540의 기록으로 2홈런, 12타점, 3도루를 남겼다. 콜업 3일 전에는 4안타를 포함해 다섯 타점을 기록하기도 했다.
“우리는 연승 행진을 이어가고 있으며, 그 점에서 팀에 도움을 준 것을 기쁘게 생각한다”고 송은 말했다.
비록 두 경기뿐이지만 송은 홍의 커리어 최악의 슬럼프에서 얻은 기회를 잘 살렸다.
홍은 이번 시즌까지 통산 타율이 .311에 이르렀으나 2026년에는 모든 자격 타자들 가운데 세 번째로 낮은 타율을 기록하고 있다. 구단의 감독은 홍에게 휴식을 주되 퓨처스 리그로의 강등은 선택하지 않았다.
그리고 홍은 수요일 경기 전 송에게 도움의 손길을 건넸다. “왕얀청에 대한 영상을 더 보라고 하셨고 아이패드도 빌려주셨다”고 송은 말했다. “왕이 첫 구질로 빠른 공을 자주 던지는 경향이 있다는 점을 파악했고 그에 대비했다. 홍창기의 도움에 감사하다.”
