An appeals court has increased the prison term for a former official of the Unification Church, sentencing him to 18 months for distributing luxury gifts to a former first lady in exchange for favored treatment regarding church matters. The ruling, issued by the Seoul High Court on Monday, upheld most of the lower court’s January decision.
The court determined that the defendant provided a Graff diamond necklace valued at 62.2 million won and a Chanel bag valued at 12.7 million won to Kim Keon Hee, wife of the former president, in July 2022 while seeking favors related to church interests.
Additionally, the court found that the defendant gave 100 million won in illegal political funds to a now-opposition party member in January 2022, describing him as a close ally of the former president.
The court also overturned the lower court’s acquittal on embezzlement charges, finding that the defendant embezzled church funds to purchase a separate Chanel bag for Kim in April 2022, which contributed to the heavier sentence.
Special counsel had sought a four-year prison term for the defendant.

항소 법원은 월요일, 통일교 글로벌 본부 전임 책임자였던 인물이 윤전 엔 보석 요청 관련으로 2022년 7월 김건희 전 대통령 부인에게 사치 선물을 제공했다는 혐의로 징역 18개월을 선고했다. 이는 1심보다 무거운 형량이다.

항소 법원은 윤이 김씨에게 6200만원 상당의 그라프 다이아몬드 목걸이와 1270만원 상당의 샤넬 가방을 2022년 7월에 전달하면서 교회 관련 다양한 사안에 대해 이익을 청탁했다고 판단했다.
또한 2022년 1월에 윤이 같은 보수의 야당 대표인 권성동 국회의원에게 불법 정치 자금으로 1억원을 전달했다고 판단했다.
법원은 2022년 4월 김씨에게 별도의 샤넬 가방을 선물하기 위한 교회 자금을 횡령한 혐의에 대해서는 1심의 무죄를 뒤집고 유죄를 인정해 형량을 추가로 증가시켰다.
특검 측은 윤에게 징역 4년을 구형했다.
