Illegal fishing by foreign vessels in South Korean waters will face tougher punishment under revised laws, the maritime ministry said Thursday.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the cap in fines on unlicensed vessels operating in the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) will be raised to 1.5 billion won ($1 million) from the previous 0.3 billion won.
The move came as President Lee Jae Myung has instructed maritime police to take stern measures against illegal fishing by Chinese vessels in South Korean waters, known as the exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

해양수산부는 목요일 남한 해역에서 외국 선박의 불법 어획에 대해 개정 법률에 따라 더 강력한 처벌이 부과될 것이라고 밝혔다.
해양수산부에 따르면, 국가의 배타적경제수역(EEZ)에서 무허가 선박이 벌금의 상한은 기존 3억 원에서 15억 원으로 인상될 예정이다.
이 조치는 이재명 대통령이 한국 해역에서 중국 선박의 불법 어획에 대해 해양경찰에 강경한 조치를 취하라고 지시한 데 따른 것이다.
