A 36-year-old pregnant woman at 20 weeks was turned away by 16 medical facilities in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province before being admitted to a hospital in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, about three hours later.
The incident adds to a rising number of cases in which pregnant women have remained stranded in ambulances after hospitals refused to admit them, underscoring shortages in obstetric care infrastructure in regional areas of the country. According to the Daegu Fire and Disaster Headquarters, a call was received at 2 a.m. on March 25 reporting abdominal pain from the woman staying at her in-laws’ home in Dong District, Daegu.
Emergency responders asked the Emergency Medical Control Center to arrange hospital transport, but 16 maternity units in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province refused to accept her for reasons including full beds, no on-call obstetrician, or doctors being tied up with emergencies.
The control center ultimately arranged a transfer to a hospital in Asan, where the woman had been receiving prenatal care. Transport began at 3:14 a.m. and concluded at 5:14 a.m. with a two-hour journey, and the patient arrived in stable condition without immediate signs of labor.
Both the woman and her baby were reported to be in good condition and were discharged after treatment.
The decline to accept nearby obstetric emergencies reflects broader concerns about regional medical capacity, with data showing increasing long-distance transfers from Daegu in 2024 and 2025, including cases involving cerebrovascular, obstetric, and pediatric conditions, as well as ophthalmology and urology.

또한 응급구급대가 전문 치료 절차를 직접 체험할 수 있도록 병원에 상주하여 현장 교육을 강화하겠다고 덧붙였다.
