Customs authorities reported 14 cases of illegal silver smuggling valued at 4.56 billion won ($3.08 million) in the first quarter, according to officials on Wednesday.
The seized value for January–March doubled and was about 2.7 times higher than the same period last year, according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS).
The agency announced an intensified crackdown to curb silver smuggling, which has been used for tax evasion and money laundering amid rising global silver prices.
The objective is to proactively prevent tax evasion and criminal money laundering through high‑intensity enforcement.
Silver prices on the international market have surged by more than 200 percent this year compared with a year ago, nearing $114 per ounce at record levels.
