A senior Pentagon official described the ability to redeploy military assets to urgent needs around the world as a significant strength of the U.S. defense system, while addressing concerns about the possible movement of a THAAD asset from Korea to the Middle East.
Michael Duffey, undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment, made the remarks at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing following reports that parts of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system were being moved to the Middle East amid the war with Iran.
Duffey said the U.S. emphasizes flexibility in reallocating assets to meet global needs and cannot specify the duration of any particular redeployment, though he reaffirmed the commitment to the Seoul-Washington alliance and to providing applicable capabilities.
During the hearing, lawmakers pressed concerns about the redeployment in the context of North Korean threats and past opposition from China to hosting THAAD, noting the economic pressures South Korea experienced as a result.
