The Netflix animated feature “KPop Demon Hunters” is drawing international attention as it vies for Oscars glory at the 98th Academy Awards. The film is nominated in two major categories: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for its track “Golden.”
The competition for Best Animated Feature includes “Arco,” “Elio,” “Little Amélie or the Character of Rain,” and “Zootopia 2.” In the Best Original Song category, “Golden” competes against songs from “Dianne Warren: Relentless,” “Sinners,” “Viva Verdi!” and “Train Dreams.”
Directed by Maggie Kang, the action-fantasy follows three K-pop superstars who secretly protect the world from evil spirits. The film has achieved global success, becoming the most-watched title in Netflix history with more than 500 million views and boosting interest in locations in Seoul featured in the movie.
“Golden” is a collaboration among prominent Korean talent, written and produced by K-pop producers including Teddy, 24, and the IDO collective, with EJAE co-voicing in the role of Rumi. The track, performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami as the in-film group Huntrix, achieved major chart feats worldwide, topping the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Official Singles Chart.
The film has already earned awards this season, winning Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, and “Golden” won Best Song Written for Visual Media at the Grammys, marking a historic achievement for a K-pop song by Korean composers.
