Hanwha Defense USA and Hanwha Philly Shipyard secured their first project with the U.S. Navy as subcontractors to Vard Marine US for the Next Generation Logistics Ship (NGLS) program, also known as the light replenishment oiler (T-AOL).
The contract marks the first U.S. Navy award to Hanwha Defense USA since the company’s establishment and Hanwha Group’s acquisition of the Philly Shipyard. Since December 2024, Hanwha has invested more than $200 million to upgrade the shipyard’s workforce, capabilities and capacity.
Under the deal, Hanwha will partner with VARD to conduct a market survey and carry out concept design and refinement for the new NGLS platform. The company will also support manufacturability, commercial construction practices and the evaluation of production costs.
The award includes options for functional design planning and special studies. The NGLS is designed to provide sustained afloat or ashore refueling, resupply and rearm capabilities through a smaller platform using commercially available, non-developmental and proven technologies.
“This award represents an important step in our ability to leverage our world-class shipbuilding expertise in building the ships the Navy needs to support our servicemembers deployed in contested maritime domains,” said Tom Anderson, president of shipbuilding at Hanwha Defense USA.

한화 디펜스 USA와 한화 Philly Shipyard가 Vard Marine US의 하도급업체로서 차세대 물자공급함(NGLS) 프로그램, 일명 경량 보급유조선(T-AOL)으로 미 해군과의 첫 프로젝트를 확보했다.
해당 계약은 한화 디펜스 USA의 설립 이후 첫 미 해군 수주이자 Philly Shipyard 인수 이후의 첫 계약이다. 2024년 12월 이후 한화는 선박 조선소의 인력, 능력 및 생산능력을 업그레이드하기 위해 2억 달러 이상을 투자했다.
계약에 따라 한화는 VARD와 파트너십을 맺어 신규 NGLS 플랫폼에 대한 시장 조사를 수행하고 컨셉 설계 및 개선 작업을 진행한다. 또한 생산성, 상업적 건조 관행 및 생산 비용 평가를 지원한다.
