The U.S. Army based in South Korea began participating in an annual springtime joint exercise with South Korean forces on Monday, focusing on readiness and modernization of the alliance, according to the Eighth Army.
The Eighth Army joined the Freedom Shield exercise, which commenced earlier in the day and will run through March 19, serving as the ground component for U.S. Forces Korea and the Combined Forces Command, per U.S. military officials.
The joint drills will feature complex scenarios, including a combined live-fire air assault, a combined wet gap crossing, and a joint medical evacuation exercise, the Eighth Army stated.
All major subordinate commands of the Eighth Army, including the 2nd Infantry Division, the 19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, and the 65th Medical Brigade, will participate in Freedom Shield.
The U.S. 11th Airborne Division, deployed from Alaska, will participate in a combined airborne operation involving a strategic airborne insertion into the Korean theater of operations.
