The 30-year-old Korean, ranked eighth in the world, fired a 6-under 66 to reach 17-under 199 for the tournament. She opened with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 fifth before a bogey on the seventh, finishing the front nine with four birdies and an eagle.
Kim described her start as exceptional but acknowledged mistakes on the later holes, noting the front nine felt like a game at times. She birdied the 16th on the back nine to regain a share of the 17-under mark, but missed a 15-foot birdie on the 17th and pars on the 18th after driving into the rough.
