A Korea-based baseball team cut reliever Riley O'Brien from its World Baseball Classic roster due to a calf injury, presenting a setback for a pitching staff already short on depth.
The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said it requested permission from tournament organizers to replace O'Brien with Doosan Bears closer Kim Taek-yeon.
O'Brien, who has a Korean mother and an American father, was one of four U.S.-born players of Korean descent on the Korean WBC roster. Players may represent the country of birth of one parent, even if not born there.
Korea manager Ryu Ji-hyun had designated O'Brien as closer and planned to deploy him in high-leverage late-inning scenarios.
O'Brien sustained a mild right calf strain during a live bullpen session at the Cardinals’ spring training site in Florida and has not pitched off a mound since.
Korea will compete in Pool C at Tokyo Dome against Japan, Australia, Chinese Taipei and Czechia.
O'Brien produced his best major league season in 2025, posting a 2.06 ERA over 42 games with six saves.
In a message relayed by the KBO, O'Brien said his recovery has been slower than hoped and expressed a desire to participate if healthy, noting travel plans by his family and his wish to represent Korea again in the future.
Kim Taek-yeon, 20, earned the 2024 KBO Rookie of the Year with 19 saves and a 2.08 ERA in 60 appearances, and recorded 24 saves with a 3.53 ERA in 2025. He has 157 career strikeouts in 131 1/3 innings and is training with the Bears in Australia, with plans to join the national team in Okinawa, Japan.
Korea will also be without two key starting pitchers in Moon Dong-ju (shoulder) and Won Tae-in (elbow).

오브라이언은 한국계 어머니와 미국인 아버지를 둔 선수로, 3월 5-17일 열리는 WBC 한국 대표팀 로스터에 포함된 4명의 미국 출생 한국계 선수 중 한 명이었다. 이 대회는 선수들이 부모 중 한 명의 출생국을 대표할 수 있도록 허용한다.
국가대표팀 매니저 류지현은 이미 오브라이언을 마감투로 지목했고, 31세 오른손 투수를 후반 이닝의 고비 상황에서 활용할 계획이었다.
그러나 오브라이언은 플로리다주 주피터의 커멘트 트레이닝 현장에서 진행된 라이브 볼런 세션 도중 경미한 오른쪽 종아리근육 염좌를 입었고, 지금까지 마운드에서 던지지 못하고 있다.
한국은 도쿄돔에서 열리는 Pool C에서 일본, 호주, 대만, 체코와 대결한다.
오브라이언은 2025년 42경기에 등판해 2.06 ERA를 기록하며 커리어 최다 세이브 6개를 기록하는 등 빅리그에서 가장 좋은 해를 보냈다.
KBO를 통해 전달된 메시지에서 오브라이언은 종아리 부상 회복이 예상보다 느리다고 밝혔다.
“이번 선발은 나와 가족에게 큰 의미가 있다. 가족이 이미 관람 계획을 세웠다. 나도 직접 그 자리에 있고 싶지만 다가오는 시즌 건강을 최우선해야 한다. 한국 대표팀에 모든 행운이 있기를 바라며, 앞으로도 나라를 대표할 기회가 있기를 바란다.”
김태연은 2024년 KBO 루키 오브더이어로 선정되며 60경기 19세이브, ERA 2.08을 기록했다. 2025년에는 24세이브와 ERA 3.53을 기록했고, 커리어 157K를 131.1이닝에서 기록했다.
김태연은 이번 달 호주에서 베어스와 함께 훈련 중이며, 이번 주 일본 오키나와에서 열리는 국가대표팀 캠프에 합류할 예정이다.
한국은 한화 이글스의 문동주(어깨)와 삼성 라이온즈의 원태인(팔꿈치) 두 명의 핵심 선발 투수도 부상으로 빠진 상태다.
