Two duty-free operators have received approval to run zones at Incheon International Airport that were vacated by previous tenants.
Lotte Duty Free and Hyundai DF Co. were approved after submitting bids in January for licenses to operate the DF1 and DF2 zones. The airport operator had named them preferred bidders in the prior month.
The former operators, Shinsegae Duty Free Inc. and Hotel Shilla Co., relinquished their licenses amid declining sales.
With clearance from the Korea Customs Service, Lotte will operate the DF1 zone and Hyundai will run the DF2 zone for seven years through June 2033, with an option to extend the contracts up to 10 years, the airport operator said.
A Lotte official forecast more than 600 billion won in annual sales for the DF1 zone, while Hyundai projected 1.1 trillion won in annual sales for its duty-free business.
Shinsegae plans to cease operations at the DF2 zone by April 27, though its DF4 zone shops at the airport will continue operating.
Hotel Shilla had returned its DF1 license to the airport operator in September of the previous year.
The DF1 and DF2 zones mainly offer cosmetics, perfumes, liquor and tobacco products.
Duty-free operators have faced ongoing losses amid unfavorable market conditions, including a weak currency, slower economic growth and reduced spending by core customers.
