President Lee Jae Myung's chief of staff, Kang Hoon-sik, is scheduled to meet Canada's secretary of state for defense procurement, Stephen Fuhr, at Cheong Wa Dae on Friday, according to Cheong Wa Dae. The meeting will mark their second encounter in less than two weeks, following Kang's earlier talks in Canada when he visited as a special envoy promoting Korea's defense exports.
Fuhr is in Korea for a weeklong visit that includes tours of shipyards and defense firms. Earlier in the day he met with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back to discuss broader cooperation in the security and defense industry.
The Canadian Patrol Submarine Project is valued at about 60 trillion won ($41 billion). Two Korean shipbuilders and a German defense contractor have been shortlisted as the final contenders for the project.

강훈식 비서실장과 푸어의 만남은 2주가 채 되지 않는 기간에 벌어지는 두 번째 만남으로, 강 실장이 한국의 방위 수출 확대를 홍보하기 위한 특별 대사 자격으로 캐나다를 방문했을 때의 면담에 이은 것이다.
푸어 국장은 일주일간의 한국 방문 기간 동안 국내 조선소와 방위산업 기업들을 방문할 예정이며, 같은 날 오전에는 안규백 국방부 장관을 만나 안보 및 방위산업 전반에 걸친 협력 확대를 논의했다.
이 캐나다 측 방문은 오타와가 캐나다 순찰용 잠수함 프로젝트의 공급업체를 선정할 시점에 이뤄지는 것으로, 사업 규모는 60조 원으로 추정된다(미화 약 410억 달러).
한국의 두 업체와 독일의 한 업체가 최종 후보로 남아 있었다.
