Milan — Short track speed skating star Choi Min-jeong tied multiple Korean Olympic medal records with her performance at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on Thursday.
Choi led Korea to gold in the women's 3,000-meter relay at Milano Ice Skating Arena, joining Kim Gil-li, Shim Suk-hee and Noh Do-hee to hold off Italy and Canada.
The victory gave Choi her sixth career Olympic medal, tying her for the most medals by a Korean athlete and placing her on par with former shooter Jin Jong-oh, ex-archer Kim Soo-nyung and speed skater Lee Seung-hoon. She also tied ex-short tracker Chun Lee-kyung for the most Winter Games gold medals by a Korean athlete.
“Before this Olympics, I was really grateful for the opportunity to chase the record,” Choi said. “It feels like a dream to be able to achieve that record with this medal. I am really happy.”
This marked Choi’s fourth appearance at Milan, with Korea crashing out early in the mixed team relay while she competed, and missing finals in the 500m and 1,000m events. She has one more chance to medal in the 1,500m, where she is the two-time defending champion and could become the first short tracker to win three consecutive golds in the same distance.
Choi, 27, began her Olympic career by winning the 1,500m and relay golds at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, and she added a 1,500m title plus silvers in the 1,000m and relay at Beijing 2022. She took a break for the 2023-2024 season for mental and physical reset to peak for 2026. Her international résumé includes 24 world championship medals, 17 of them gold, and three overall world titles.
The Olympic medal tally continues to extend Korea’s record in short track speed skating, with Choi’s latest triumph contributing to a longstanding legacy in the sport.
