Korea's baseball manager said he was mostly satisfied with the national team's training camp in Japan ahead of the World Baseball Classic (WBC), noting progress and a positive direction.
The team’s scrimmage against the KT Wiz was rained out at Kadena Baseball Stadium, ending the camp’s tuneup games with four wins and a loss. The camp began on Feb. 12.
The manager said the cancellation was acceptable, as he did not want to overtax position players with the WBC starting in less than a week in Tokyo.
He would have preferred to have starter Song Seung-ki face live batters for three innings, but the pitcher completed his required work in the bullpen.
“Overall, my satisfaction level with the camp is 90 percent,” he said. “Even though we didn’t play today, I remain optimistic about our situation.”
Some relief pitchers, however, have not been throwing as hard as usual, preventing a full 100 percent satisfaction, the manager added.
“Our relievers are about 3 to 4 kph below their usual velocity from the middle of a season,” he said. “I am confident those numbers will rise once they compete in the real tournament and feel the pressure on the mound.”
The team will travel to Osaka for two official pre-WBC games against Nippon Professional Baseball clubs, facing the Hanshin Tigers on Monday and the Orix Buffaloes on Tuesday at Kyocera Dome. They will then practice at Tokyo Dome on Wednesday.
In Osaka, six U.S.-based players will join the squad, including outfielder Lee Jung-hoo (captain) of the San Francisco Giants, infielder Kim Hye-seong of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and outfielder Jahmai Jones of the Detroit Tigers, who has Korean maternal heritage.
“With players joining in Osaka, we will determine the best lineup through the two games there,” the manager said, adding that pitching roles will be assigned based on velocity and other factors.
Korea’s first Pool C game is against the Czech Republic at 7 p.m. Thursday. After a day off, Korea will face Japan on March 7, Chinese Taipei on March 8, and Australia on March 9, to close the opening round. The top two teams from Pool C advance to the quarterfinals in Miami.
The manager expressed confidence that the team can advance beyond the opening round for the first time since 2009, when they finished as runners-up to Japan.
