Milan — Grateful for the support he has received along the way, Kim Jae-youl, the global skating chief recently elected to the IOC's top decision-making body, said Monday he will try to pay it forward.
Kim, president of the International Skating Union and an IOC member, spoke with reporters at the "Home of Skating" during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, five days after his election to the IOC's Executive Board.
He is the second South Korean to serve on the IOC Executive Board, joining former IOC Vice President Kim Un-yong, and said earning this position reflects South Korea's elevated status in international sports and carries a strong sense of responsibility.
The Executive Board is described by the IOC as bearing general responsibility for the administration of the IOC, including managing its finances and overseeing the process for selecting host candidates for the Olympic Games.
Kim, 57, became an IOC member in October 2023 in his capacity as the head of the global governing body of one Olympic sport, and has led the ISU since June 2022. He previously served as president of the Korea Skating Union from 2011 to 2016, and held roles including executive vice president of international relations for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics and vice president of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee.
Speaking on South Korea's growing presence in international sports, Kim noted he hosted more than 30 young South Korean sports administrators in Lausanne last fall, roughly double the number hosted in 2019, adding that many have built experiences abroad and found new roles in international sports administration.
Kim said IOC President Kirsty Coventry has ideas to make the Olympic Games more approachable, transparent and entertaining, and he looks forward to collaborating on further improving the Olympic experience. He also emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance skating, aiming to appeal to a younger generation of fans and to continue implementing changes introduced during his tenure as ISU president.
밀라노 — 국제 스케이팅 연맹의 수장이자 IOC 이사회 신규 구성원으로 최근 선출된 김재율은 월요일 그동안 받아온 지지에 감사를 표하며 이를 되갚아 나가려 한다고 말했다.
김재율은 국제 스케이팅 연맹의 회장이자 IOC 이사로서, 밀라노 아이스 스케이팅 아레나 인근의 호텔에 마련된 선수단 및 이해관계자들을 위한 모임 장소로 운영되는 '홈 오브 스케이팅'에서 한국 취재진과 만나 이야기를 나눴다. 이 공개 자리는 김이 IOC 이사회에 선출된 지 다섯 일이 지난 시점에 열렸다.
김은 단지 한국인으로서는 두 번째로 IOC 이사회에 재직하게 되는 인물이었으며, 선배인 김운용 전 부위원장을 따라 이번 자리에 오르게 됐다.
“개인적으로 이사회에 선출된 것은 큰 영광입니다. 이 자리에 오른 것은 국제 스포츠계에서 한국의 위상이 높아졌다는 것을 반영하는 일이며, 그동안 앞서 나선 많은 이들이 국제 스포츠 공동체에서 자신을 증명하기 위해 열심히 노력해 왔기 때문입니다. 책임감을 느낍니다.”
IOC에 따르면 이사회는 “IOC의 행정 전반에 대한 일반적 책임을 지고” 있으며, IOC의 재정을 관리하고 올림픽 개최 후보의 접수 및 선출 절차를 감독하는 역할도 맡고 있다.
김은 57세로 2023년 10월 IOC 위원이 되었고, 이는 올림픽 종목의 세계 규율 기구의 수장으로서의 지위를 바탕으로 한 것이다. 그는 2022년 6월부터 ISU의 수장을 맡아왔다.
이전에 그는 2011년부터 2016년까지 한국스케이팅연합의 회장을 역임했고, 2018년 평창 동계올림픽의 국제 관계 부회장을 지냈으며, 한국스포츠올림픽위원회의 부회장을 역임했고, 2014년 소치 동계올림픽에서 한국 선수단의 선발단장을 맡았다.
다년 간 김은 한국의 국제 스포츠 기구 내 위상이 성장하는 것을 보아 왔다고 말했다. 그는 지난해 가을 로잔에 기반을 둔 30명이 넘는 젊은 한국 스포츠 행정가들을 IOC와 다수의 국제 연맹의 본거지인 로잔에서 열린 만찬에 초대해 대접했다고 회고했으며, 이는 2019년보다 두 배 이상 많은 규모였다.
그들 중 다수가 2018년 평창 대회 조직위원회에서 일했으며, 그들이 다른 곳에서 경력을 쌓아 로잔에서 새로운 길을 찾는 모습을 보는 것은 정말 고무적이었다고 김은 말했다.
오늘의 위치에 오기까지 많은 도움을 받았듯이, 이 젊은 이들이 성장하도록 돕고 국제 스포츠 행정에서 중요한 역할을 계속 수행할 수 있도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
김은 IOC 회장인 커리스티 커번턴이 올림픽을 ‘더 다가가기 쉽고, 더 투명하며, 더 즐겁게’ 만들기 위한 아이디어를 많이 갖고 있다고 밝히며, 올림픽 경험을 더 개선하기 위해 그녀와 협력하길 기대한다고 전했다.
또한 ISU의 회장으로 재임하는 동안 이미 여러 변화를 추진해 온 만큼 스케이팅 종목을 더 발전시키기 위한 방법을 계속 모색할 것이라고 덧붙였다.
“스케이싱을 더 젊은 팬층에게 매력적으로 만들 방법을 늘 찾으려 한다,”고 김은 말했고, “스포츠를 통해 가능한 한 많은 사람들에게 영감을 주고 싶다”는 포부를 밝혔다.
