The Art of Sarah is a Korean original series on a streaming platform that peels back the layers of a woman who built her life on a lie and a detective determined to uncover it.
"There is a special kind of fun in watching a person chase their desires, and the man who’s trying to catch her," the director Kim Jin-min said during a press conference in Seoul, describing the drama as capturing the psychological tension between a woman who aspires to become a luxury brand and a man drawn into her enigmatic world.
The eight-episode series follows Sarah Kim (Shin Hye-sun), a luxury brand manager who built a perfect life on a fake identity. Her world of lies begins to crumble when she becomes a murder suspect and is chased by Mu-gyeong (Lee Jun-hyuk), a detective who tries to uncover who she really is. The drama largely follows Mu-gyeong's point of view, positioning him as the audience’s eyes as Sarah’s story shifts and refracts.
Kim credited Lee for sharp questions that shaped the direction of the series and praised Shin for her focus on set.
"If the audience likes this work, it means they liked the actors," Kim said. "The project was only possible because I had complete faith in their performances."
The eight-episode series marks a reunion for the two leads, who last worked together eight years ago on the acclaimed crime thriller Stranger (2017).
"I had great trust in Shin Hye-sun as a wonderful partner and felt very comfortable working with her again," Lee said regarding their reunion. He admitted that the role was mentally demanding, saying, "I had a lot of stress and I think I went along with Mu-gyeong's emotions as there were missions at every filming site."
Shin also expressed respect for her co-star, mentioning how their relationship has evolved since their last project. "Back then, I was just a rookie following a great senior, but this time I felt a sense of trust where we understood each other without speaking," Shin said.
Shin described her character as a mysterious figure with multiple sides. "I was fascinated by how one person could have so many different identities, and I just had to take the role because I was so curious about how the story ends," she said.
The Art of Sarah will be released exclusively on the streaming platform on Friday.

김 감독은 드라마의 비정통적 내러티브를 칭찬하며 “처음 대본을 봤을 때 구조가 매우 흥미롭고, 알 수 없는 방향으로 전개돼 예측 불허의 전개가 기다리는 것을 느꼈다”고 말했다.
다음 시리즈는 가짜 신원 위에 완벽한 삶을 구축한 럭셔리 브랜드 매니저 사라 킴(신혜선)으로, 그녀의 거짓 세계는 살인 혐의로 의심받게 되면서 정체를 밝히려는 형사 무경(이준혁)에 의해 쫓기기 시작한다. 이 드라마는 주로 무경의 시점을 따라가며, 그의 눈을 통해 사라의 이야기가 변화하고 굴절하는 모습을 관객에게 제시한다.
샤인 혜선은 이 작품에서 사라 킴 역을 맡아 연기한다.
김 감독은 이준혁의 예리한 질문이 시리즈의 방향을 형성하는 데 큰 역할을 했다고 평가했고, 촬영 현장에서 신혜선의 집중에도 높은 점수를 남겼다.
“관객이 이 작품을 좋아한다면 배우들을 좋아했기 때문일 것이다.”
이번 시리즈는 두 주연 배우의 오랜 만의 재회로도 주목받고 있다. 두 사람은 2017년 방영된 범죄 스릴러 'Stranger'에서 함께 작업한 이후 다시 같은 화면에서 만난다.
이준혁은 “신혜선은 훌륭한 파트너였고 다시 함께 일하는 것이 매우 편안했다”고 말하며 재회에 대한 신뢰를 밝혔다. 또한 이 역할은 정신적으로 부담이 컸고, 촬영지마다 임무가 있어 무경의 감정선을 따라가야 했다”고 덧붙였다.
신혜선은 동료 배우에 대한 존경을 표하며 이번 작업에서 서로를 말 없이 이해하는 신뢰가 생겼다고 설명했다. 예전에는 신참으로 선배를 따라다녔지만 이번에는 서로의 존재를 더 잘 이해하게 되었다고 말했다.
신혜선은 다중의 면모를 지닌 신비로운 인물로 묘사되며, 한 사람이 이렇게 다양한 정체성을 가질 수 있다는 사실에 매료돼 이 역할에 임했다고 밝혔다.
