President Lee Jae Myung said he is not yet prepared to withdraw his controversial nomination of Lee Hye-hoon for the key post of budget minister, despite a cascade of ethical allegations and a breakdown in the parliamentary confirmation process.
Speaking at a New Year’s press conference at Cheong Wa Dae, the president noted that the nomination last month ended up far more contentious than anticipated, and that he did not expect to encounter such fierce resistance.
The standoff has been a major test of Lee’s pragmatic governing approach. The nomination, for the newly created Ministry of Planning and Budget, was framed as a historic bid for bipartisanship and features Lee Hye-hoon—a veteran economist and three-term former lawmaker from the conservative opposition.
The process has been overshadowed by allegations, including claims of mistreatment of aides and concerns that family members engaged in fraudulent housing applications to secure a luxury apartment in Gangnam District, Seoul.
Lee expressed regret that the confirmation hearing for the nominee did not take place, saying he had hoped to hear her directly and allow the public to form its judgment through the parliamentary process. “I wanted to have an opportunity to hear her side publicly and make a decision after seeing how the people judged it, but even that opportunity has been blocked. It is unfortunate for her, but I am also very disappointed,” he said.
He said any decision should not be based solely on one side’s claims, and that he would wait for more information before reaching a conclusion.
Lee acknowledged criticism of the presidential office’s vetting process but defended its review, arguing it was difficult to verify allegations such as mistreatment of aides. “How would we know whether she abused her staff or not?” he asked, noting that she had been nominated five times by the conservative camp and elected to the National Assembly three times, with no issues prior to the nomination. He described the selection as a substantive effort at inclusive governance, not a symbolic gesture, adding that integration means sharing opportunities and governing together, and that conservative values play an important role in certain areas of the economy.
Later in the day, the ruling and opposition parties tentatively agreed to hold a confirmation hearing for the budget minister nominee on Friday, provided she submits the documents requested by the main opposition People Power Party. A hearing originally scheduled for Monday was canceled after the PPP announced a boycott, citing insufficient materials.
Turning to other issues, the president warned against religious organizations’ involvement in politics, calling recent allegations of collusion between some religious groups and politicians “a path to national ruin.” He cited media reports suggesting the Shincheonji Church of Jesus and the Unification Church have been politically active, and said some Protestant groups are now openly and systematically intervening in politics. He highlighted that sermons have included calls for the president’s death for the country’s survival, which he described as very serious.
Lee emphasized that the separation of church and state must be upheld and that strict legal punishment is necessary. “Individuals may have political preferences and religious beliefs, but using the religious system itself for political means is absolutely not permissible,” he said, noting that he does not favor punitive laws by default but considers this issue dangerous.
Wednesday’s press conference marked the president’s first official briefing since relocating the presidential office back to Cheong Wa Dae.

그는 한쪽의 주장만으로 결정을 내리는 것은 불공정하다고 강조하며, 결론에 이르기 전에 추가 정보를 기다리겠다라고 밝혔다.
청와대의 지명 검증 절차에 대한 비판을 인정하되, 보좌진 학대 의혹 등과 같은 주장을 확인하기 어렵다고 판단했고, 검증 절차를 옹호했다.
“그녀가 보좌진을 남용했는지 어떻게 알 수 있겠느냐?”라고 묻고, 보수 진영으로부터 다섯 차례 지명됐고 국회의원으로 세 차례 선출됐으며 지명 시점까지 문제가 제기된 적이 없었다고 덧붙였다.
그의 선발은 상징적 제스처가 아니라 포용적 거버넌스에 대한 실질적 노력으로 의도됐다고 덧붙였다.
“통합은 단지 말로만 이뤄져서는 안 된다. 기회 공유와 함께 다스리는 것을 의미한다.” 이 대통령은 또한 보수적 가치가 경제의 일부 분야에서 중요한 역할을 한다고 지적했다.
같은 날 오후 여당과 야당은 이 지명에 대한 인사청문회를 금요일에 열기로 잠정 합의했으며, 이는 주요 야당인 국민의힘이 요구한 서류를 제출하는 경우에 한한다.
원래 월요일로 예정됐던 청문회는 국민의힘의 보이콧 선언으로 취소됐다.
이 대통령은 종교 단체의 정치 개입에 대해 강한 경고를 내놓으며, 일부 종교 단체와 정치인 간의 공모 의혹을 “국가 파멸로 가는 길”이라고 불렀다.
“일단 종교적 신념이 정치적 성향과 합쳐지면 타협의 여지가 없다. 이는 매우 위험하고 근절돼야 한다.”
언론 보도를 인용해 이 대통령은 신천지 예수교 증거장막성전이 2000년대 초부터 정치에 활발히 관여해 왔으며, 통일교도 정치 활동에 관여해 왔다고 밝혔다.
“과거에는 조직적 노력이 드물었지만 최근 상황은 악화됐다. 일부 개신교 단체들이 이제 공개적으로 체계적으로 정치에 개입하고 있으며, 설교에서 ‘이재명은 나라를 살리려면 죽어야 한다’고 말하기도 한다. 이는 매우 심각한 일이다.”
또한 그는 교회와 국가의 분리 원칙은 결코 훼손돼서는 안 되며, 엄격한 법적 처벌이 필요하다고 강조했다.
