The Samsung Lions have announced the signing of veteran player Choi Hyoung-woo to a two-year contract worth 2.6 billion won ($1.77 million), including incentives. This agreement was made public on Wednesday, marking the return of the 41-year-old slugger to the club where he began his professional career over two decades ago.
Choi is recognized as the all-time leader in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with 1,737 RBIs. He initially played for the Lions and their minor league affiliate from 2002 to 2005, and again from 2008 to 2016, before spending nine seasons with the Kia Tigers. His decision to rejoin the Lions comes as he aims to conclude his illustrious career with the team.
As he approaches his 42nd birthday, Choi holds several KBO records, including career leader in doubles (543) and total bases (4,426). He ranks second in hits (2,586) and walks (1,197), and third in home runs (419) and runs scored (1,365).
Choi has demonstrated continued productivity, hitting 24 home runs this past season, his highest total in five years, and driving in 86 runs. His batting average of .307, slugging percentage of .529, and 30 doubles were all his best figures since 2020.
The addition of Choi enhances an already formidable Lions lineup, which led the KBO in home runs for the past two seasons. The team also achieved the highest slugging percentage this year at .427, with standout performances from first baseman Lewin Diaz and perennial All-Star Koo Ja-wook, among others.
Since the opening of Daegu Samsung Lions Park in 2016, the Lions have hit more home runs than any other team, totaling 1,517. The stadium's short left field is particularly advantageous for Choi, who had a standout season there in 2016, leading the league in several categories.
In a statement, Choi expressed enthusiasm for his return, stating he looks forward to "a new beginning" and aims to be a leader for the team. He emphasized that his primary goal for the upcoming season is to help the Samsung Lions win a championship, rather than focusing on personal statistics.
Choi previously contributed to the Lions' success, helping them secure four consecutive Korean Series titles from 2011 to 2014, and winning additional championships with the Tigers in 2017 and 2024.
Originally drafted by the Lions in 2001, Choi faced challenges early in his career but made a significant comeback after his military service, ultimately becoming the oldest recipient of the Rookie of the Year award at age 24. Since then, he has consistently performed at a high level, reaching double figures in home runs and playing over 100 games each season.

최형우는 2001년 드래프트에서 6라운드로 라이온즈에 포수로 지명되었다. 그러나 그는 첫 번째 시절 동안 6대 2의 성적으로 총 8번의 타석만 소화하고, 대부분의 시간을 KBO의 마이너 리그인 퓨처스 리그에서 보냈다. 라이온즈는 2005 시즌 종료 후 그를 방출했다.
