Veteran actor Ahn Sung-ki is currently in critical condition and receiving treatment in an intensive care unit, according to a statement from his agency on Wednesday.
Ahn was rushed to the emergency room around 4 p.m. on Tuesday after collapsing at home while choking on food. He had previously disclosed in a 2022 interview that he has been battling blood cancer since 2019.
"Following a sudden deterioration in his health, the actor has been admitted to the hospital and is under the care of medical staff," stated Artist Company, noting that his current condition and prognosis are being evaluated by the medical team.
"We hope the stability of the actor and his family will be the top priority at this time," the agency added.
The 73-year-old actor has appeared in approximately 140 films throughout his career, which has spanned over six decades.
Ahn, often referred to as the "Nation's Actor" for his significant contributions to the industry, made his debut in 1957 in the film "The Twilight Train" as a child actor.
He has built one of the most prolific careers in Korean cinema, earning recognition for his roles in films such as "Silmido" (2003), "Hanbando" (2006), "Unbowed" (2011), and "Hansan: Rising Dragon" (2022).
Throughout his career, he has received numerous Best Actor awards at local film ceremonies, including the Baeksang Arts Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
In addition to his acting career, Ahn has been a representative for UNICEF since the early 1990s.
