The Samsung Lions have announced the addition of two foreign-born pitchers to their roster, signing American right-hander Matt Manning and Japanese right-hander Yura Miyaji.
Manning, 27, has signed a one-year contract valued at $1 million. He has a total of 50 major league appearances, all as a starter for the Detroit Tigers from 2021 to 2024. Manning was selected in the first round of the 2016 draft and holds a career record of 11-15 with a 4.43 ERA over 254 innings, including 178 strikeouts and 85 walks.
In the 2025 season, Manning spent the entirety of his time in Triple-A, initially with the Tigers and later with the Philadelphia Phillies following a trade in July. He recorded a 2-3 record with a 6.47 ERA across 33 outings, including six starts, totaling 55 2/3 innings pitched, with 60 strikeouts and 44 walks.
The Lions noted that Manning's four-seam fastball averages 152 kph, complemented by a mix of a sweeper, curveball, splitter, and slider.
Miyaji has been designated as the Lions' Asian quota player for the 2026 season, with a salary of $100,000 and an additional $50,000 available in performance incentives.
Starting in the 2026 season, the KBO will permit teams to sign an additional foreign-born player from an Asian country or Australia, beyond the standard three foreign players.
Miyaji played for the Kufu Hayate Ventures Shizuoka in the minor leagues of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) during the 2025 season. This team is one of two clubs without an affiliation in the top NPB competition.
Although Miyaji has not yet pitched in NPB, he has progressed from amateur baseball through independent leagues to the NPB minors. In 2025, he recorded a 0-2 record with a 2.88 ERA in 24 games, covering 25 innings, striking out 31 batters and walking 11. His fastball can reach speeds of 158 kph, and he utilizes a four-pitch repertoire including a four-seam fastball, splitter, slider, and curveball.
The Lions anticipate that the addition of Manning, along with returning ace Ariel Jurado, will enhance their starting rotation, while Miyaji is expected to bolster their bullpen.
