Former President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared before a special counsel team on Saturday to face questioning regarding corruption allegations tied to his wife, Kim Keon Hee. This appearance occurred at the Seoul Central District Court in southern Seoul.
This marks Yoon's first interaction with Special Counsel Min Joong-ki’s investigation team, which was established in July to explore various corruption-related claims involving the ex-first lady.
Yoon is facing accusations of being an accomplice to Kim, who is alleged to have received free opinion polls valued at 270 million won (approximately $183,000) from a self-proclaimed power broker, as well as acquiring a painting worth 140 million won from a former prosecutor.
Additionally, he is under suspicion for violating the Public Official Election Act for purportedly providing false information about his wife during a presidential debate in 2021.
The special counsel team is also investigating whether Yoon was involved in Kim's alleged acceptance of luxury gifts from various sources, including Lee Bae-yong, the former head of the National Education Commission, in exchange for favors.
When questioned by reporters regarding Yoon's awareness of Kim's acceptance of luxury gifts, his lawyer stated that the former president was "completely unaware."
This appearance is expected to be Yoon's final one before the special counsel, as the investigation is scheduled to conclude on December 28.

윤 전 대통령은 아내가 자칭 권력 중개인으로부터 2억 7천만 원(약 18만 3천 달러) 상당의 여론조사를 무상으로 받은 혐의와, 전 검사로부터 1억 4천만 원 상당의 그림을 받았다는 혐의에 가담한 것으로 기소되었다.
또한 2021년 대선 후보 시절 아내에 대해 허위 진술을 한 혐의로 공직선거법 위반에 연루된 의혹도 받고 있다.
민 특별검사팀은 윤 전 대통령이 김건희가 이전에 국가교육위원장을 지냈던 이배용으로부터 호화 선물을 받았다는 의혹과 관련하여 개입했는지도 조사하고 있다.
기자들이 윤 전 대통령이 김건희의 호화 선물 수령 사실을 알고 있었는지 질문하자, 그의 변호사는 전 대통령이 "전혀 알지 못했다"고 밝혔다.
이번 조사는 특별검사 조사 종료일이 12월 28일로 예정되어 있어 윤 전 대통령의 민 특별검사팀 앞 마지막 출석이 될 가능성이 크다.
