A Korean four-man bobsleigh team has reached the World Cup podium on the same Italian track that will host the 2026 Winter Olympics, enhancing the country's medal prospects for the upcoming competition.
The team, consisting of pilot Kim Jin-su, pushmen Kim Sun-wook and Kim Hyeong-geun, and brakeman Lee Geon-u, secured a bronze medal in the first International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF) World Cup of the season held in Cortina d'Ampezzo. They completed the race in a time of 1:50.34, while the gold medal was claimed by the German team led by Johannes Lochner, finishing in 1:49.73. Another German team, piloted by Francesco Friedrich, took second place with a time of 1:49.95.
The final standings were determined after two races on the track, with the Korean team recording times of 55.14 seconds in their first run and 55.20 seconds in the second. An Austrian team, led by Markus Treichl, finished just 0.01 seconds behind Korea overall, with times of 55.19 seconds and 55.16 seconds.
This achievement marks Korea's first World Cup medal in the four-man bobsleigh event. Kim Jin-su expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, stating, "I am really gratified with the third-place finish. It means so much more to me because I competed with such great teammates. The Olympic track here may seem easy but is actually difficult in some corners, and vice versa in some other areas. We will try our best to grab an Olympic medal."
In the two-man race the previous day, Kim Jin-su and Kim Hyeong-geun finished in fourth place.
The IBSF World Cup will continue in Innsbruck, Austria, starting Friday.
Korea has previously won one Olympic medal in bobsleigh, a silver in the four-man event at the 2018 PyeongChang Games, which remains the only bobsleigh medal awarded to an Asian country.

김진수는 한국 봅슬레이 스켈레톤 연맹이 발표한 성명에서 “3위에 올라 매우 기쁘다. 이런 훌륭한 팀 동료들과 함께 경쟁했기 때문에 더 의미가 크다”고 전했다. 그는 "올림픽 트랙은 쉬워 보일 수 있지만 몇몇 코너에서 실제로는 어렵고, 다른 구간에서는 반대의 경우도 있다. 우리는 올림픽 메달을 확보하기 위해 최선을 다할 것"이라고 덧붙였다.
김진수와 김형근은 전날 같은 장소에서 열린 2인조 레이스에서 4위를 기록했다.
IBSF 월드컵은 금요일부터 오스트리아 인스부르크로 이동한다.
한국은 2018년 평창 올림픽에서 원윤종이 이끈 4인조 이벤트에서 은메달을 획득한 바 있으며, 이는 아시아 국가의 유일한 봅슬레이 메달이다.
