Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan emphasized the technological and security strengths of Korean submarines during a meeting with his Canadian counterpart on Monday, as they explored opportunities for enhancing bilateral cooperation in advanced industries and resources, according to Kim's office.
The meeting with Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly took place in Seoul, coinciding with Korea's Hanwha Ocean competing for Canada's patrol submarine project. The company was shortlisted as one of the final two contenders for the project in August.
During the discussion, Kim expressed gratitude for Canada's decision to include a Korean company in its submarine project and highlighted the security and technological advantages of Korean submarines, as reported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
Kim advocated for the expansion of the bilateral strategic partnership across various industrial sectors, including battery technology, electric vehicles, hydrogen, and critical minerals. He noted that trade between the two nations has doubled over the past decade since the implementation of their free trade agreement in 2015.

김 장관과 캐나다 산업부 장관 멜라니 졸리의 만남은 한국의 한화 오션이 캐나다의 순찰 잠수함 프로젝트에 참여하고 있는 가운데 서울에서 이뤄졌다. 한화 오션은 지난 8월 이 프로젝트의 최종 두 후보 중 하나로 선정됐다.
회의에서 김 장관은 캐나다가 한국 회사를 잠수함 프로젝트 후보로 선정한 것에 대한 감사의 뜻을 전하며, 한국 잠수함의 보안 및 기술적 강점에 대해 설명했다. 이는 산업통상자원부의 발표에 따른 것이다.
김 장관은 배터리, 전기차, 수소 및 핵심 광물 등 다양한 산업 분야에서 양국의 전략적 파트너십을 확대해야 한다고 강조했으며, 2015년 자유무역협정 발효 이후 양국 간 무역이 지난 10년 동안 두 배로 증가했다고 언급했다.
