The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and Seoul National University (SNU) signed a partnership agreement on Monday to join the ministry’s M.AX Alliance project, focusing on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) models for humanoids, self-driving cars, and AI factories.
The M.AX Alliance, launched in September, is a collaborative initiative that includes over 1,000 participants, such as major companies, to enhance the commercialization of advanced AI technologies across various sectors, including manufacturing and biology.
The ministry aims to drive innovation in manufacturing processes and develop emerging sectors like humanoid robotics, with a target of generating over 100 trillion won ($67.7 billion) in added value by 2030, positioning Korea as a global leader in AI-driven manufacturing.
Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan emphasized the potential of combining the manufacturing capabilities of M.AX member companies with the research expertise of SNU to achieve these ambitious goals.
As part of the agreement, SNU will engage in key initiatives focusing on AI model development, manufacturing data utilization, and specialized talent cultivation. The university will collaborate with alliance manufacturing companies to co-develop AI models.
To support these efforts, the ministry has allocated approximately 1.19 billion won in targeted research funding to SNU through 2029 for the specified fields.
Companies in the alliance will supply necessary data and platforms, while SNU will develop specialized AI models based on this data. The completed models will be integrated into corporate products and factories.
By early next year, SNU and the alliance plan to create a framework for sharing manufacturing datasets accumulated through research and AI factory projects, which will involve preprocessing, standardizing, and anonymizing the data for AI development and testing.
The partnership also aims to strengthen talent development through collaboration projects and training programs, offering SNU students opportunities to engage in the M.AX Alliance through internships and R&D projects.
Additionally, the agreement intends to expand cooperation to include one-on-one partnerships between six specialized SNU research institutes and corresponding divisions within the M.AX Alliance.

M.AX 얼라이언스는 부처와 한국상공회의소가 9월에 공동으로 시작한 협력 이니셔티브로, 삼성전자, 현대자동차 그룹, 레인보우 로보틱스와 같은 주요 기업을 포함하여 1,000명 이상이 참여하고 있다.
이 얼라이언스는 산업, 학계 및 연구 기관을 통합하여 제조에서 생물학에 이르기까지 다양한 분야의 첨단 AI 기술 개발 및 상용화를 가속화하기 위해 공동 연구와 대규모 시연 프로젝트를 활용하고 있다.
부처는 이 얼라이언스를 통해 제조 공정에서 혁신을 촉진하고 휴먼 로봇을 포함한 신흥 분야를 육성하려 하며, 2030년까지 100조 원 이상의 부가 가치를 창출하고 한국을 AI 기반 제조의 글로벌 강국으로 만들겠다는 목표를 갖고 있다.
산업통상자원부 장관 김정관은 "M.AX 회원사의 세계적 제조 능력과 서울대학교의 창의적 연구 능력 및 우수한 인력이 만나면 한국이 첨단 제조의 글로벌 리더가 되는 목표는 더 이상 먼 미래가 아닐 것"이라고 밝혔다.
협약에 따라 서울대학교는 AI 모델 개발, 제조 데이터 활용 및 전문 인재 양성에 중점을 두고 프로젝트의 주요 이니셔티브에 참여하게 된다.
SNU는 얼라이언스 내 제조 기업들과 협력하여 휴먼 로봇, 자율주행차 및 AI 기반 공장을 위한 AI 모델을 공동 개발할 계획이다.
이러한 노력을 지원하기 위해 최근 부처는 학교에서 이 세 분야에 대해 약 11억 9천만 원의 연구 자금을 2029년까지 제공하기로 하였다.
기업들은 로봇, 자동차 시스템 및 공장 시스템과 같은 필수 데이터와 플랫폼을 제공하며, 서울대학교는 이 데이터를 활용하여 전문 AI 모델을 개발하게 된다. 모델이 완성되면 AI 모델은 기업의 제품 및 공장에 통합될 예정이다.
내년 초까지 서울대학교와 얼라이언스는 연구 개발 및 AI 공장 프로젝트를 통해 축적된 제조 데이터셋을 공유하기 위한 체계를 구축할 계획이다.
공유된 데이터는 전처리, 표준화 및 익명화되어 AI 모델 개발 및 현장 테스트에 적용될 것이다.
양측은 산업-학계 협력 프로젝트 및 교육 프로그램을 통해 인재 개발을 강화할 예정이다.
부처는 서울대학교 학생들이 M.AX 얼라이언스에 참여할 기회를 더욱 확대할 계획이다. 학교의 창업 지원 프로그램을 통해 우수 학생을 선발하고, 그들을 연구개발 프로젝트 및 인턴십 프로그램에 연결할 예정이다.
협약을 통해 양측은 여섯 개의 전문 서울대학교 연구소와 M.AX 얼라이언스 내 상응하는 부서 간의 일대일 파트너십으로 협력을 확대할 계획이다.
