"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — The Movie: Infinity Castle," the latest feature in the popular Japanese animation franchise, has become the highest-grossing film in South Korea for 2023, as reported by its distributor on Saturday.
As of Friday, the film has attracted a cumulative total of 5.638 million viewers, surpassing the previous top film, "Zombie Daughter," which logged 5.637 million admissions.
This achievement signifies the first occasion that an animated film has led South Korea's annual box-office rankings. Although foreign animated films like "Frozen 2" have made significant box-office impacts, none have previously secured the top position for the year.
The movie is based on the comic and television series of the same name and is the first part of a three-part finale planned for the franchise.
Since its release in South Korea on August 22, the film reached 1 million viewers within just two days and exceeded 3 million admissions on its tenth day, marking the fastest pace for any film released this year.
