President Lee Jae Myung stated on Saturday that addressing the issue of families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War should be a "top priority" for both South and North Korea.
In a speech delivered by Second Deputy National Security Adviser Lim Woong-soon at the third Separated Families Day ceremony, Lee expressed that despite the current state of deep distrust in inter-Korean relations, the reunification of separated families remains a critical issue that requires collaborative efforts from both sides. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation to fundamentally resolve this matter.
Lee pledged to "strengthen the basis" for exchanges among separated families, including plans for DNA tests to use genetic information for potential reunions with relatives in North Korea. He highlighted the administration's commitment to ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula and expressed a desire to expedite family reunions to alleviate the grief experienced by those affected, thereby preventing the sorrow from being passed down to future generations.
Additionally, on Friday, Lee met with elderly individuals who had fled to South Korea during the war, urging North Korea to allow these families to confirm the whereabouts of their loved ones.
In 2013, South Korea officially designated two days before the Chuseok fall harvest holiday as a commemorative day for separated families. This year's Chuseok is set to be observed on Monday.

금요일에는 이 대통령이 전쟁 중 북한에서 남한으로 피란 온 노인들과 만나, 평양 당국에 분리된 가족들이 친척의 fate를 확인할 수 있도록 허락해 줄 것을 촉구했습니다.
2013년, 한국은 추석 명절 이틀 전을 분리된 가족을 위한 기념일로 지정했습니다.
